Caliban in the thought of Roberto Fernández Retamar

Different interpretations in literature, history and philosophy have problematized the character and category of Caliban. Contemporary perspectives: Eagleton (2001), Frey (2000), Kirk (2006), Rebaza-Soraluz (2004) —just to mention a few cases— confront the question of the symbolic redefinition of such a concept. The purpose of this article is to answer the following question: From the formulation and approach that Fernández Retamar makes of the post-Western (as an ideology that allows us to understand and overcome the West, that is, as that with which Latin America, or Caliban, he has been "confronting"), can a reinterpretation of the Caliban symbol be carried out, now with post-Western characteristics? With the analysis of this question, it is sought to adequately follow the classic and contemporary controversy that is available in literature, history and philosophy in this regard.
