Abstract

In this article, an analysis of the manifestation of verbal signs in a narrative with an indigenous theme is carried out, exploring the relations of permanence and change of meanings. To achieve this objective, we focus on the work entitled "Amazonian Contacts of the Third Degree" (1997), written by Márcio Souza, which unfolds as a singular theatrical act. The plot develops around the extraordinary experience of a young indigenous couple, belonging to an isolated tribe in the Amazon region, when faced with an emblematic object discovered in the forest. Who left this object there and what does it symbolize? To answer this mystery, the narrative is covered with verbal signs that, in addition to constructing the characters' speeches and didascalias, raise thematic-ideological perceptions, mainly regarding the imminence of death symbolized by strange noises in the forest. Metaphors shape the plot, promoting an aesthetic character to the narrative and the ending surprises the reader/spectator who has to imagine the future of the heroes. Our analysis adopts an approach based on the semiotics of Algirdas Julius Greimas (1975), supported by studies by Diana Luz Pessoa Barros (2005) and José Fiorin (1995) regarding the generative course of meaning. In addition, we consider the perspectives of Anne Ubersfeld (2005), Matsaud Moisés (2007) and João de Jesus Paes Loureiro (1995) on theater and Amazonian culture, together with contributions from other authors, to support and strengthen the listed propositions.
