Abstract

In this article, which is part of sociolinguistic theory, more precisely, using the concept of linguistic change and variation, we bring an important description and analysis of variations and changes that occurred in the popular songbook in Mato Grosso, a state of the federation with great marked linguistic diversity by the orality of traditional peoples who, since the 18th century, colonial period, had their orality marked by contact between indigenous people, enslaved Africans and Europeans, and also by the influence of the immigration of other peoples from the most different regions of the country from 70s of the last century, making the language spoken daily, in some regions, rich in variations. With the arrival of immigrants, these variations of the language in use were put into dispute with other forms of use, sometimes marked by oral traces from other regions (by immigrants), others marked by scientific knowledge (formal or standard language). In our analysis we were able to verify that both change and variation occur very frequently in the oral language of the people of Mato Grosso, a fact that proves the heterogeneous character of the language. We were also able to see how the orality of a people serves as a marker of gestures of resistance, both in spoken form (prose) and sung form (verse/song).
