Abstract

The article discusses the Maranhão Men's First Division Football Championship between 2000 and 2023, highlighting transformations, challenges, and economic, political, and social influences throughout this period. The objective of this text is to analyse the socio-economic and political factors that influence the development of the state championship. The research used cartographic and statistical methodology to identify changes in the diversity and permanence of clubs. The results indicate a reduction in the diversity of clubs during the period, with rapid rises and falls of teams such as Cordino, Juventude SAMAS, and Tuntum. The pandemic affected both sporting events and available resources. The success of clubs such as Sampaio Corrêa, Imperatriz, and Moto Club opened up space for other teams in national competitions. However, the clubs' dependence on public and private support, especially during the pandemic, highlighted the fragility of the local sports scene. It is important to strengthen institutional and structural support for clubs in Maranhão, as well as encourage new research that deepens understanding of the challenges and prospects for football in the state.
