ANÁLISE DOS CONTEÚDOS DO LIVRO DIDÁTICO DO 6º ANO DA REDE MUNICIPAL DE PIRIPIRI (PI)

Abstract

The teaching of English in the municipal school system of Piripiri (PI) begins in the 6th grade, and the content of the adopted textbook is often the subject of criticism and discussion among teachers. Thus,this article aims to analyze the contents of the English textbook used in the 6th grade of Piripiri’s municipal schools, considering linguistic, didactic, and thematic aspects, as well as the fact that this represents students’ first contact with a foreign language. Specifically, the study seeks to: analyze the textbook’s didactic sequence, its introduction to the language, and its linguistic, grammatical, and cultural elements; compare the didactic sequence of the 6th-grade textbook with the municipal curriculum framework; and evaluate its alignment with the guidelines of the Brazilian National Common Curricular Base (BNCC). To achieve this, an exploratory qualitative study was conducted through content analysis of the textbook, following Severino (2017) and Gil (2008). Additionally, a comparison was drawn between the competencies and skills established by the BNCC and those outlined in the Municipal Curriculum Framework of Piripiri (SEDUC). The findings reveal that while the textbook aligns with the competencies and skills required by the BNCC and the municipal curriculum, however, it does not adequately address the needs of beginners, offering limited vocabulary for first-time learners and introducing all ten parts of speech through contextualized texts and instructions presented entirely in English, among other hurdles for novices.
