This article examines the female characters Little Emily from David Copperfield and Estella Havisham from Great Expectations by Charles Dickens through the lens of the “fallen woman.” Within the repressive social context of the 19th century, these characters are analyzed in terms of their roles in the narrative and their relationship with male protagonists. The analysis is based on the literary construction of the characters within their respective novels. Little Emily is presented as a victim of social expectations and disdain for her status after her involvement with Steerforth, while Estella is shaped as a tool of vengeance by her adoptive mother, reflecting emotional repression. Both characters symbolize different facets of the “fallen woman”: Emily is exiled due to her social transgression, while Estella, by challenging norms, becomes a “semi-fallen woman.”
