SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC TRANSFORMATIONS OF THE REGION

This text aims to present and discuss how the Planalto da Conquista was inserted in the national coffee production circuit, pointing out both the technical issues involved in choosing the region and the nuances of the social and spatial changes that occurred, impacting an entire traditional structure of lands that were mainly linked to social reproduction and not exactly to the reproduction of capital. As a methodological procedure, consultations are made with bibliographical references that deal with the reading of the metamorphoses caused by this cultivation in the region, in addition to field research, in which it was possible to collect testimonies from farmers who experienced, through State policies, this initial period of arrival of coffee in Planalto da Conquista. It is observed that the arrival of coffee in the region, in addition to being accompanied by “modernizing” technical and scientific elements, brought with it an increase in land concentration and labor productivity, generating not only the inclusion of the Planalto da Conquista in the circuit of production and circulation of coffee in the country, but also precarious work and the degradation of nature.
