Dora Grisel Aranda is a graduate student at Texas Tech University (TTU) in the Spanish doctoral program currently working on her dissertation focusing on Masculine Immigration in Junot Diaz’s works. She was born and raised in Odessa, TX, and attended the University of the Permian Basin (UTPB) where she earned two bachelor degrees and an M.A. in Spanish. She has been a liaison for the Spanish Coordination Team, she has been the president and an editor of Céfiro, and has been a TEACH fellow.

Her teaching interests include Medical Terminology for Spanish Speakers, Heritage Speaker courses, Latin American and US Latino literature, Portuguese language and literature, and Study Abroad.  Her research interests include 20th Century Latin American Literature, Portuguese Literature, Contemporary Peninsular Literature, Comparative Literature, US Latino Literature, and Linguistics.

Her non-academic interests include traveling, photography, and spending time with her family and friends. Her favorite color is green and she loves the fall. Her parents are originally from small towns in the state of Chihuahua, Mexico. Growing up she was only permitted to speak Spanish in at home and learned English in public school. As a heritage speaker, she has experienced first-hand part of the difficulties that arise with being bilingual. Probably one of the main reasons she decided to major in Spanish was that she wanted to learn to write and speak the “correct” Spanish. After many years of studying, she has found out that there is no such thing as a “correct” Spanish, all Spanish is “correct,” and she continues to enjoy studying it.
