Cassandra’s complex
between militancy and postponed authorial emancipation

Anticipating themes and questions important to LGBTQIA+ community as well as to the revisionism of the sexist and homophobic patriarchy, writer Cassandra Rios is a relevant figure of resistance and of the fight for homosexual women rights in Brazil. In addition to proposing a specific study of one of the books by the author from São Paulo, this article denounces the exclusion of her name from the canon of the great Brazilian female writers and the reductionist approach of the literary studies on her work while she was persecuted and censored by the Brazilian military regime because of the themes and questions mentioned. If in the early 2000’s, the relevance of Rios’s work (regarding a specific period in Brazilian and literature histories) started being approached with a different view, in the past few years her name slipped back into unjust oblivion. Thus, this study intends to approach her book Muros Altos (1962) as an emblematic example and to broaden the comprehension of her vitality to Brazilian literature.
