Resistance Marks in the Chronicle “Luto da Família Silva”, by Rubem Braga

Abstract

Alfredo Bosi (2002) states, in his text “Narrative and Resistance”, that the idea of ​​resistance is conjugated to the narrative from two forms of realization: as a theme and as an inherent process of writing. A chronicler par excellence, Rubem Braga can be cited as an example of a writer who carries out, in his chronicles, these two forms of resistance: in form, through lyricism and the voice of the traditional narrator; in the topics addressed, which raise questions and reflections on society and politics. In order to show how resistance is present in Braga’s work, we chose to work with the chronicle “Luto da Família Silva”, produced in 1935 from a newspaper article. In this chronicle, Braga questions, through irony and humor, the class struggle, the condition of the excluded and the social invisibility of the countless “Joões da Silva”. In our work, we consider the resistance marks as a theme and as an immanent form to the text. For this, we based our research on the work Narrativa e Resistência, by Alfredo Bosi. We also share the ideas presented by Walter Benjamin (1994), in his text “O narrador: considerações sobre a obra de Nikolai Leskov”. In addition to the cited texts, were consulted “La Forma Inicial”, by Ricardo Piglia (2015); and the essays on the chronicles of Rubem Braga, “Braga de novo por aqui” and “Fragmentos sobre a crônica”, by Davi Arrigucci (1987).
