Abstract

This work is the result of analyses conducted by the Study Group on Internationalization of the National and International Cooperation Commission of the Faculty of Education at the University of São Paulo (CCint-FEUSP), encouraged, and coordinated by Prof. Dr. Valdir Heitor Barzotto, during the 2014-2018 term. The purpose of this qualitative study was to describe the international mobility of 26 undergraduate students from FEUSP, carried out between 2015 and 2017, to discover the profile of these students and the activities they participated in. The material used for this study consisted of reports produced by these undergraduate students. The theoretical framework was based on works addressing the internationalization of higher education (Morosini, 2006; Morosini; Corte, 2018; Morosini; Corte; Guilherme, 2017), the study of international mobility of pre-service teachers (Abraham; Von Brömssen, 2018; Cushner, 2007; Morley et al., 2019; Vatalaro; Szente; Levin, 2015), and teacher education, focusing on practicum and teacher knowledge (Pimenta; Lima, 2004; 2012; Tardif, 2014). This proposal is justified because to increase and/or improve the student mobility happening at FEUSP, it is necessary to first understand how internationalization has been taking place in this initial teacher education context. Among the results, it was found that the profile of students involved in the mobility during this period consisted mainly of female students, with trips taken in the second semester of the travel year, heading to countries in the Global North, mainly in Europe. Regarding the activities carried out, 12 types were identified, none of which were done by all students, with the subjects taken being the most prominent. Finally, since this concerns academic mobility of undergraduate students, it is suggested that practicum be further encouraged and carried out in the destination countries, allowing sufficient time for reflection on these experiences.
